Dee Holt is a photographer, researcher and educator based in Northern England, whose practice sits at the intersection of environmental photography, visual communication and experimental image-making. Working across both analogue and digital processes, their work explores the relationships between people, place and environment through a practice-led and research-informed approach.
Dee holds a First Class BA (Hons) in Photography and an MFA in Photography with Distinction, and is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD examining the role of photography as a tool for public engagement with environmental pollution and ecological issues. Drawing upon a professional background in microbiology and environmental science, their research investigates how photographic practice can make complex environmental concerns visible, accessible and meaningful to wider audiences.
Environmental enquiry is central to Dee’s work. Through photography, they explore themes of pollution, biodiversity, water quality, landscape and environmental change, combining scientific understanding with visual storytelling. Their analogue practice frequently incorporates materials gathered from photographed locations, embedding elements of place directly within photographic processes and outcomes. Through experimentation with alternative and sustainable image-making methods, the work seeks to foster dialogue, reflection and deeper engagement with contemporary environmental challenges.
Alongside their creative and research practice, Dee has extensive experience in photographic education across further and higher education. As a lecturer, curriculum developer and mentor, they have supported learners at multiple stages of their photographic development, encouraging both technical proficiency and critical engagement with photographic practice. This educational experience continues through mentoring, workshops and collaborative projects that support creative exploration and professional development.
As an openly neurodivergent practitioner, Dee works within a neuro-inclusive framework that values diverse ways of thinking, learning and creating. This ethos informs both their artistic and educational practice, fostering accessible, flexible and supportive environments for collaboration, research and experimentation.
Through research, teaching and photographic practice, Dee continues to investigate how photography can act as both a creative medium and a catalyst for environmental awareness, public engagement and social dialogue.
